tianhua redefines industrial textile factory with green core in tianjin, china

chinese studio tianhua has proposed adding natural landscape elements into an existing factory in tianjin, china. the renovation project improves the ecological environment of the industrial structure by subtracting a courtyard out of the middle. redefining the volume, this space also incorporates water, plants and stones to help create a quiet and comfortable atmosphere, while the void itself enables light and air to filter through to the deep floor plan. a circulation pathway has been outlined in the layout to allow people experience the constantly changing mass.

existing north view

the current cross-shaped layout has been preserved, while also increasing a sense of flow throughout. the factory’s beams and column framing are exposed with glass that is used to fill the connecting parts. the renovation also features a perforated metal box, which rises up from the middle of the building. the contrast between old and new materials expresses the marks of the time passing, offering a reinterpretation of the industrial edifice.
