articulated through strong triangular forms, taiwan’s ‘asia museum of modern art‘ is conceived as a landmark building for taichung city, bringing together students, teachers and the general public. designed by renowned japanese architect tadao ando, the project took six and a half years to complete, and will host a variety of events including seminars and workshops alongside a range of exhibitions.

the building is formed of three triangular floor plates, stacked as to provide a sheltered external patio at ground floor level, where open-air cafés and other areas of congregation are formed. the geometry is repeated with V-columns supporting the structural steel frame, and is again emphasized through the project’s landscaping.

closely affiliated with the asia university, the design is conceived as a catalyst that is intended to transform the school’s growing campus. alongside a host of pieces from established names such as rodin and degas, the museum plans to display works from young taiwanese artists, providing a global stage for contemporary works. ando’s design is a typically controlled and elegant response that brings together art, nature, and people in one united structure.
