international architectural practice SO-IL has announced the groundbreaking of the ‘jan shrem and maria manetti shrem museum of art‘ at the university of california, davis. working alongside bohlin cywinski jackson and whiting-turner, the building has been designed to challenge and advance perceptions of 21st century galleries.

uniting exhibition, education, and event space under a 50,000 square foot roof – termed the ‘grand canopy’ – the project offers an active yet relaxed series of experiences, activities and places, forming distinct areas for both group collaboration and personal reflection. the building blurs divisions between internal and external space, encouraging a greater awareness of the museum’s context.

the shaded external landscape becomes a new platform for the campus, a place for the active production of cultural experiences and a symbol of the university. ensuring the scheme’s sustainability, the museum’s flexible infrastructure can be adapted over time, while the proposed model of living, working and learning  makes sure that the design needs fewer resources to prosper. internally, educational facilities will be at the front of the building, while exhibition rooms for the fine arts collection spread across the program. offices and loading bays are found at the rear of the design, where parking is also provided.

‘it is with enormous excitement that we break ground on the jan shrem and maria manetti shrem museum of art,’ said florian idenburg, principal, SO – IL. ‘our passion lies in making public space where people come together. it is a treat to be working on the davis campus, and the sublime landscape of the central valley. the shrem museum is a key project for our office. we believe it captures accurately the spirit of the place and the energy of its inhabitants. we are excited to see it become a reality’.
