sébastien mathieu, owner of le sphinx a private tattoo room in paris has literally tattooed onto 25 bottles for whiskey brand, J&B. presented in a rough black wooden box, the individually designed bottles each took around 20 hours to be completed. the containers were fully covered with a latex material, just like the one used when tattooing – slim enough to respect the outline’s shape and strong enough to be hit multiple times by the sharp needles. a human skin color was also applied to help strengthen the overall perception of the design.

J&B rare scotch blend whiskey began in london in the second part of the xixth century by the famous wine and spirits merchant justerini & brooks. around the same time in history, tattooing started to spread through london, a trend that evolved from royal navy sailors, who would come back from distant travels with ink art embellished on their skin. finally this form of body art reached the british upper class when prince bertie, later edward vii was first tattooed in 1862, before it then spread all over great britain and throughout europe.

as a celebration of this origin, art direction was overseen by french studio button button and the finished products are on display at publicis drugstore and at l’éclaireur rue herold in paris, france.
