in a creative intersection of excellence in craftsmanship and mastery in architecture, zaha hadid has created a series of vases made from crystal for the french brand lalique. presented at maison et objet spring 2014, the collection comprises two vases, both of which exemplify the architect’s trademark continuous contours and the luxury glassmakers’ dedication to exquisite detail. the innate fluid lines that seamlessly run around the circumference of the volumes seem to have a life of their own and are highlighted in both texture and hue by clear or black crystal. enhancing the overall effect are contrasting satin and polished finishes that epitomize lalique. the partnership between the master glassmakers and the world-famous architect and designer demonstrates a fresh approach to the medium, a new formal vocabulary and vision. hadid explains, ‘I have always had a passion for glass and crystal, and started collecting pieces at an early age in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. I was delighted to be asked by lalique to collaborate as we have recently been exploring the specific properties of glass and its behavioral characteristics.’

the manifesto vase reflects the language of experimentation and research into fluidity and transparency through the crystal medium. it displays innate, fluid lines which seem to animate. each piece is enhanced by the contrasting satin and polished finishes characteristic of the lalique brand. hadid explains how she has followed the example of rené lalique, a fervent admirer of the natural world: ‘we often observe nature in order to create an architectural work. the elegance, cohesion and beauty of the natural world are a genuine source of inspiration to us.’ each numbered edition is available in clear crystal — catching the light in dazzling ways — or in black — lending depth and a sense of mystery to this work of contemporary art.
