the design brief was laid out clearly by the client: a ‘double volume living space, 4 bedrooms, reuse as much of the existing structure as possible.’ local practice park + associates responded with a new construction that replaces the existing house of burnt orange brick. the new mimosa house is a three dimensional composition of planes and boxes rendered in carefully considered materials. every room in the home has a direct connection to the exterior through sliding glass walls and various decks. the dark granite entry is sharply contrasted by progressing into the double-height timber encased living space at the heart of the home. the master suite in turn is built from steel and glass floating over the rest of the house with views across the neighborhood. in certain areas, the same burnt orange brick is re-used in memory of the previous structure.
