deborah berke on the interior design of 432 park avenue

set to open in 2015, the rafael viñoly-designed 432 park avenue will stand as the tallest building in the western hemisphere at a height of 1,396 feet (425.5 meters) once completed. as construction continues on the new york skyscraper, plans for the interior of the building’s 104 residences are well underway, directed by deborah berke, who has developed schemes which embrace the feeling of living in a traditional new york park avenue apartment.

drawing on viñoly’s architecture to inform their design, the interiors of 432 park avenue are functional and luxurious, and centered around the panoramic views that each apartment features — framed by 10′ x 10′ windows, with the arrangement of the rooms and floor plans also dictated by the apertures. the strict geometry of the building is strongly mirrored throughout, with the spaces featured in grand, square proportions.

deborah berke has approached the residences with the idea that as one enters a room, they are fully inline with the views of new york. furniture such as beds and bathtubs are organized in such a way that they are placed square with the windows. monolithic bespoke marble counters and flooring in the kitchens and bathrooms, express the feeling of richness and opulence up high in the sky.

when it is done, 432 park avenue will host a range of amenities — double-height spaces spanning 2,787 square meters (30,000 square feet) — for its inhabitants, including: an entire floor dedicated to entertainment, hosting a lounge, private restaurant and adjacent outdoor terrace for dining and events; a 75-foot indoor swimming pool, spa and fitness center with sauna, steam and massage rooms; a library and reading area; screening room and performance venue; conference rooms and children’s playroom. in addition, special services such as in-suite catering, concierge, 24-hour doorman and valet parking services will be offered.
