combining a crystal vase with overflowing water, kazunaga sakashita of japanese company critiba design+direction has created a piece that connects the plant to its source of life. the surface tension of the liquid expresses the vitality of the container’s function, to display and keep nature alive. the vase itself is made from shaving a piece of crystal into its delicate form, with a central 20mm hole that extends to 100mm in depth. this funnel acts as a visual mechanism, making the water appear shallow at the top of the vase, turning it into a textural element.
the crystal piece merges the vase, water and plant into one element

ripples spread across the water
the water becomes another surface texture in the vase
a saucer is used to collect water which has overflowed
