the ‘plus pendant’ by australian designer andy zhou is a ceiling mounted OLED luminaire that can be controlled via a bluetooth paired app on a smartphone or tablet device. wanting to showcase the future capabilities of organic LEDs, such as a thin, surface-based light and flexibility, the panels are mounted on a movable frame that goes up or down. the conical structure is transformed into different positions, to either an area/directional light or spotlight. the arms respond with the help of an internal motor, magnets and tensile cables drive the annulus up the steel column, giving the illusion of an invisible mechanism shifting the state of the ‘plus pendant’.

the luminaire consists of 36 LG chem OLEDs and by laying them on a cross-shaped chassis, the light can be evenly spread to create a soothing, low glare high CRI effect, with maximum illumination reaching 2636 lumens. the textile cover is manufactured using a 3D knitting process using a CNC machine. the work was supported by CSIRO, australia’s national research agency in flexible electronics.
