vienna-based artist gisela stiegler has created ‘lampenfieber’ light fixtures, a collection made from expanded polystyrene fish boxes. the material, normally found in packaging, is lightweight and rigid. stiegler transforms the industrial waste by carving into the surface. the techniques used for the process come from old austrian rural customs and baroque conventions. once the form is established, the structure is lacquered in either silver, white, blue, steel or bronze. the series combines function  and material with the traditional practice of carving to create the unique pieces.
