beyond the hill by kazuhiko kishimoto unites home and gallery

primarily a residential property, ‘beyond the hill’ by kazuhiko kishimoto, also functions as a small gallery complete with office and workspace. located in a suburban area of yokohama, japan, it was established during the design phase that the semi-public building must be open to the town and the community, while at the same time providing the security required of a private dwelling.

at ground level, the on-site gallery is anchored at the heart of the scheme, surrounded and connected by raised decking. a communal seating area – which also serves as outdoor exhibition space – offers views of adjacent woodland, providing ever-changing seasonal vistas.

this central atrium connects the compact design, an area where internal and external programs interact, with independent staircases leading to the living quarters and offices at first floor level. the uppermost storey comprises a comfortable lounge, and bedrooms, one of which features a balcony allowing views of the surrounding landscape and strengthening the home’s relationship with the natural environment.
