‘join.dip.cut’ by michal avraham – the objects before slicing photos by nitzn zohar & mel bergman

for her graduating project from the bezalel academy for arts and design in jerusalem, michal avraham engaged herself in investigating the notion of ‘material morphology’, attempting to develop a process that tells the story of an object. the result is ‘join.dip.cut’ in which avraham builds up laser-cut wooden constructions, covering them with ‘plaster sand’, a material she developed. composed mostly of plaster, sand and various pigments, she dips / coats the wood structures with different colored layers of the substance. the outcome looks much like an abstracted totem pole. once they are set, avraham slices the sculptural pieces into three different sections, each one in fact standing as its own complete object, never identical. the final pieces could be used as stools or low tables.
