scaling up miniature furniture pieces, slovakian designer silva lovasova has created the ‘1:1 collection’, where she manipulates the kitschy items to suggest new possibilities of digital technologies in design. the small pieces found in dolls’ houses are based on real items of the grown ups’ world, but are sadly misshapen and disproportional. after scanning the hand-size furniture, they were translated into the computer without altering or making any improvements. simply enlarged to a functional size, the whimsicality of mini-world is fully expressed. the collection is made of different materials, from prototyping to final ones. the tool path is untouched and all other traits are preserved, as way of inscribing the making process. the intention was to support the imperfections in the originals with careless execution, in contrast to digital technologies that are characterized and valued for their flawless outputs.

the bookcase was made from extruded polystyrene, the tea items and lamp were mould in porcelain

the polystyrene armchair, lamp and peanut were milled from epoxy tooling board

the imperfections in the miniatures are expressed in the scaled-up versions
