hisakazu shimizu creates sculpture with a pompadour hairstyle

designer hisakazu shimizu has created ‘regent in olives’, a white, three-dimensional, olive-like form topped with a pompadour hairstyle for setouchi triennale 2013. while visiting the island of shodoshima, shimizu came across an olive grove of a local grower iwao ishii, which he chose as the location for his sculpture. materializing amidst the olive trees is the fresh and fascinating form, encouraging a creative exchange between locals, art-lovers and children. in a hole places at the center of the face, ishii puts locally grown fruits to sell to visitors to the island. shimizu intends for his work to boost interest in the local environment and to play a role in revitalizing the region.

as part of a workshop opened in july, children were invited to see and interact with the ovular sculpture, drawing and painting onto the pure white surface. ‘regent in olive’ as conceived as a symbol for conversation, drawing both local inhabitants and visitors together as mutual participants.
