launching in new york city, august 3 – octorber 16, 2011, is the ‘BMW guggenheim lab‘, a six-year project aimed at developing new ideas for urban living. kicking off the travelling event is a pop-up structure by tokyo-based studio atelier bow-wow, an open-air loft which references the style and elements of a mediterranean loggia to be built on a vacant lot in the east village. the mobile design will host a series of events and programs, serving as a public platform to discuss and explore new ideas of urban living.

featuring a transparent mesh skin, the structure will house a flexible rigging system that can be raised and lowered to accommodate a variety of events and functions including lectures, performances and screenings. appearing to be a floating volume, the pavilion maximizes its flexibility by keeping the floor plan open and connected to the street.

the project will make a stop in berlin in 2012 and then on to asia as a part of the project organized by BMW and the guggenheim.
