‘500m living room’ by austrian practice caramel architects (günter katherl, martin haller, ulrich aspetsberger) is a multi-level dwelling for a family in wien, austria. placed on a 500 sqm grassy plot, the design focuses on connecting the communal living space with the outdoors, in essence, extending the interior out on to the meadow.

featuring a floating beveled volume, the ground level is wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glazing that curves around the floor plan. the interior is projected out on to the garden and outdoor pool, establishing a panoramic view of the surrounding land. a system of exterior curtains on tracks allows the inhabitants to control privacy as well as natural sun intake. the top levels are distinguished by a rhythmic treatment of vertical windows of different widths.

conceived as a continuous spatial volume, the public programs – living, dining, kitchen – is defined and grouped in ways that avoid full wall components: the living lounge is stepped down into a scooped area while a suspended entertainment system and shelving unit stands sets the dining space apart. the roof accommodates an outdoor terrace with the removed patch of grass relocated on to its surface.
