a massive polar bear puppet the size of a london double decker bus will walk through the streets of central london for greenpeace international’s day of action to protect the arctic. designed by christopher kelly and manufactured by factory settings, the people-powered arctic animal will act as part protest, part performance and will be the the focal point for the UK leg of the greenpeace event on september 15th, 2013. ‘aurora’ weighs about 3 tons and requires 15 puppeteers and 30 volunteers to operate its mechanics. the construction of the mobile puppet called on a creative team who worked to maneuver its giant paws into place. with the aid of a forklift truck, its head — which is the size of a smart car — was lifted and secured into position.
