USA pavilion curator trio announced for venice biennale 2014

the state department of the united states has chosen the three curators for the USA pavilion of the venice architecture biennale 2014. the acclaimed event, whose 14th iteration will be directed by OMA’s rem koolhaas, allows the opportunity for a vast cross-section of countries to showcase the architecture and design direction purported by the nation. leading the task for the USA is eva franch gilabert, director and chief curator of new york city’s storefront for art and architecture; along with ana miljacki, an accomplished theoretician and designer currently at MIT; and ashley schafer, editor of the discourse-shaping architecture journal, praxis. the all-female powerhouse is slated to turn the pavilion into a reimagined space for the last 100 years of american building abroad. 

taking direction from koolhaas’s mandate to focus on ‘architecture, not architects’ the curatorial team will choose 1000 projects designed by american firms outside the US and reframe the works as globally significant revitalisation efforts. in addition, the chosen works will be further filtered and altered by five ‘fellows’ selected to design in real time for the duration of the exhibit. from june through november, these five design fellows will take to task the further reinvention of these seminal pieces of architecture by the likes of louis kahn and architects’ collaborative of cambridge.
