diller scofidio + renfro (DS+R): lincoln center inside out

in 2002, at the time of being appointed the leading architects of the lincoln center renovation, the portfolio of diller scofidio + renfro (DS+R) had yet to include the realization of a large-scale commission. however, they were selected over such established architects as norman foster, richard meier and frank gehry to bring the all encompassing project to fruition. initially, DS+R was asked to revitalize the cultural campus’ public spaces and its connection to 65th street, but the scope of the undertaking quickly expanded into a complete renewal of the facilities, including: the redesign of alice tully hall’s lobby, box office and greater interior; the renovation of the julliard school; the expansion of the school of american ballet; the construction of the new hypar pavilion; the transformation of the josie robertson plaza and frontage along columbus avenue between 62nd and 65th streets; the installation of an information system through the grounds; and the addition of a pedestrian bridge across 65th street connecting the programs; as well as the just-as-if-not-more-important, but not-so-visible upgrades to the mechanical and general infrastructure of the site.

the revitalization and transformation of the modernist citadel into a porous and democratic campus is considered one of the most challenging and innovative civic projects in our recent urban history.

in commemoration of the intense architecture and design process that went into the more than 10-year redevelopment, a publication by artbook and D.A.P. (distributed art publishers) has been released. ‘lincoln center inside out’ is a comprehensive look at the site’s historical past and its evolution into the DS+R vision as it stands today. the publication appears at first glance to be a photo essay, featuring images by iwan baan and matthew monteith that capture the essence of the architecture–from construction to realization–and the continued interactions that visitors and the general public have with the reinvigorated environment. but, being comprised of gatefolds, as pages are opened up, the more intimate inner workings and history of the lincoln center are revealed. hidden behind the ‘printed façade’ is documentation of the design’s progression, presenting drawings and plans which give insight into the programmatic arrangement of the various public and private spaces, and circulation throughout the campus. the book also exposes the more technical aspects which lie below the architectonic harmony of DS+R’s scheme, disclosing of plumbing and electrical details, and scientific research on the flora and fauna being integrated into the green zones.

‘lincoln center inside out’ is a complete architectural account of the campus’s reestablishment within the new york city landscape. archival records, newspaper clippings, in depth texts, interviews with key historical and present day players involved, photographs, drawings, models are all brought together in this exhaustive account of the lincoln center, from the inside out, which on one hand is a beautiful visual account of the campus’ construction process through to completion, and on the other, an offering of experimental ephemera which has informed its final condition.
