How could future cities benefit from massivly growing populations? How could we establish a community-based, decentralized and energy efficient wireless network that is capable of connecting people with their data and with each other? A solution might be a network similar to the services of a cloud-based system but without the cloud - a system that allows you to communicate freely from all over the city and without paying. The Collective basic home-setup is a storage-device (Omni) and a wireless lan antenna (Node) placed at the window of the user’s home. The solar-powered antenna, once attached to the window will connect itself autonomously to neighboring nodes. The more neighbors participate, the wider, more efficient and safer the network gets.
Collective is the combination of existing, rather low-fi wireless technology and aims to give everyone the chance to collaborate for mutual benefits. I focused on a design language that playfully deals with in- and outside, with transparent and opaque surfaces- with public and private space. Luminant-signals are the prominent symbols of interaction. Collective should be understood as a proposal for the development of future open-source products that promote free speech and democratic information structures.
