the examination of traditional, artisanal and industrial processes of leather bicycle saddles has led, dutch designers vroonland + vaandrager to create ‘the saddle stool’. exploring the deconstruction of 19th and 20th century design classics and translating this sense of craftsmanship into the work, they are able to foster new perceptions and functions of such collections. ‘the saddle stool’ asks the question is a chair purely functional? is it a showpiece and a visual story? or is it an expression of technical know-how and therefore representative of its era? the stool, which comes in 63cm or 83cm, provides a very high level of comfort, using only natural materials. the pieces will weather with time, enhancing the design’s character and personal identity.
