camp design inc: string lattice

‘string lattice’ developed by japanese architecture studio, craft design inc. is a hand-crafted facade application for a multi-use structure, housing a gallery in the front and hat atelier in the back.

three sliding doors line the face of the gallery whose appearance had become obsolete in its generic neighborhood.  the design looked to give attention to the homely shop front while leaving the structure untouched. the gallery also required a solution that could be temporarily removed during an exhibition.

the design, which considers its context and surrounding environment, is a direct response to the subtlety of its community. the owners omitted traditional signage, allowing the strings to become the shops’ identity.

wooden frames, fit individually to each window, are painted to match the existing doors. natural hemp is then strung in vertical rows, spaced 2mm apart. once in place, the windows adopt a transparent quality, diffusing the activity on the other side.
