the sky burial by Francisco lara from chile
designer's own words:
We've always had the idea in mind that when we die, if we are good, "we go to heaven", if we are bad on the other hand, "we're going to go to hell." So, we either go up or down. Unfortunately the traditional funeral involves to bury our loved ones. This implies a strong emotional shock, leaving a hard and crude memory, which makes the psychological process of healing and mourning difficult.
This idea will transform the way we think about and deal with death today. Offering to families the possibility to remember and honor their loved ones in a more peaceful way, bringing comfort to the bereaved and help them grieve their loss through a more spiritual ritual.
The idea proposes to send the souls of our loved ones to heaven, breaking all existing schemes of a traditional funeral. After a green cremation which dissolves the deceased in an alkaline solution. Method which produces a third less greenhouse gases than standard cremation and uses a seventh of the energy. Will reduces the body into a white powder. Which then can be packaged and sent into space by a balloon, which will symbolically load the spirit of the person high in to the earth's stratosphere, to finally free it in the edge of space.
The balloon will be filled with helium, which is a very light gas that allows the balloon fly. The ascent rate can be controlled by the amount of gas with which the balloon is filled. The balloon is made from elastic polythene, which allows it to reach the stratosphere. The aim will be to use 100% recycled polythene for the manufacture of the balloon. As the balloon rises, the atmosphere thins and the pressure outside the balloon decreases allowing the balloon to expand and eventually break (This usually happens at elevations of 80,000 to 120,000 feet). Releasing the powder and freeing the soul of our love one becoming cosmic dust and making our body and soul be part of the universe.

The ceremony can be performed anywhere. Each person is different. Perhaps our loved one lived or enjoyed a specific location. The schedule depends on the decision of the family. If you like you can perform the ceremony at night. Light inside the balloon can give even more symbolism to the ritual.Blueprints
