Upon entering a classroom, students typically expect the usual: desks, chairs, a blackboard, and a collection of books and bags. However, this fall, students at Beauchamp College in Oadby, UK, are greeted by an unexpected sight—a giant praying mantis sculpture by renowned British artist and alumnus David Shrigley. Titled Mantis Muse, the three-meter-tall installation was created to emphasize the importance of art in education and advocate for increased funding for arts programs in British schools. Displayed prominently on campus, the striking piece is set to remain at the college for two weeks.

The large praying mantis sculpture created by Turner Prize-nominated artist David Shrigley was made with support from the design department at Beauchamp College. The sculpture features an animatronic head with lifelike, watchful eyes that observe students as they participate in art lessons inspired by the piece. Titled Mantis Muse, the installation is expected to influence lessons across various subjects, with additional after-school activities, such as kung fu and clay sculpting, planned under its unique presence. Shrigley hopes the installation will prompt discussions about the importance of incorporating the arts into the traditional curriculum, which currently emphasizes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Through Mantis Muse, Shrigley aims to highlight the vital role of the arts in education and advocate for broader support for arts programs in schools nationwide.
