Tradition inspires roof of DMA architects’ residence in vietnam

Vietnamese studio DMA Architects unveils 3 x 30 Introverted House, a three-story residence in a dense area of Vung Tau City, Vietnam, named after its long and narrow plot. The facade of the residence draws inspiration from traditional sloping roofs, featuring a slanted concrete roof that extends to the second floor, with cutouts for ventilation. The design team incorporates greenery into the exterior as a buffer against heat that provides additional privacy to the residents. To enhance vertical connectivity, the floor area on the upper levels is reduced, allowing light to travel further into the house. Strategically placed skylights are divided into smaller sections for improved lighting and ventilation while allowing minimal heat absorption. Perforated steel panels are used for the stairs and corridors, facilitating the flow of light and air throughout the dwelling.

3 x 30 Introverted House uses common spaces for circulation

The client sought a design that balanced simplicity with privacy, offering a peaceful retreat from the urban environment while adapting to the area’s humid tropical climate. Ho Chi Minh City-based DMA Architects approached the project with a split-level design, using common spaces as the primary circulation paths. The architects place the living room and kitchen, central to the daily life of the family, near the main skylight to make them as sunny as possible.

On the third floor, a semi-enclosed terrace offers a space shielded from noise and surrounding city views. This terrace is envisioned as a gathering place for family and friends or a quiet retreat for activities like yoga or meditation.
