Takenaka introduces Forest Architecture at Expo 2025 Osaka

At Expo 2025 Osaka, Japanese architecture and construction firm Takenaka Corporation will unveil a series of innovative, temporary 3D printed structures made from plant-based resin. Described as Architecture that Becomes a Forest, this project presents a collection of rounded pavilions designed as serene resting spots for visitors. After serving their purpose at the Expo, these buildings will be broken down by microorganisms, returning to the soil and ultimately transforming into a forest.

3D-Printed Pavilion Becomes a Flourishing Forest

Takenaka Corporation’s 3D printed building, made from plant-based resin, will serve as a temporary pavilion at Expo 2025, providing a tranquil resting spot with its soft, rounded design. As part of an interactive experience, children will attach handmade Seed Paper—crafted from recycled materials like milk cartons and old newspapers, and embedded with plant seeds—onto the surface of the pavilion. As these seeds sprout and grow, the children will nurture them, watering and caring for the budding plants, fostering a connection between people and nature.

The Japanese firm introduces a new approach to sustainable building design. The pavilion is constructed using biodegradable materials that will break down and return to the soil at the end of its lifecycle. Rather than leaving a large environmental footprint, these structures will transform into a forest on the site of Yumeshima, the Expo venue. The process reflects a shift in values from ownership to shared experiences and sustainability, demonstrating how architecture can create a lasting legacy by becoming a natural part of its surroundings.
