casa no meco: Embracing Tradition with Contemporary Simplicity

Casa no Meco, designed by Lisbon and Zurich-based architect Fábio Ferreira Neves, is a newly completed single-family residence located in the village of Aldeia do Meco, Setúbal, along the Atlantic Coast of Portugal. The project aims to blend into the local context with its simple design, reflecting the architectural language of the region. Neves’ approach aligns with the village’s identity while responding to the characteristics of the elongated site.

Facing north along the street, the house is defined by minimal openings on its large whitewashed walls, which provide both privacy and acoustic protection from the road. This restrained facade creates an atmosphere of enclosure, shielding the interior from outside distractions and reinforcing a sense of seclusion.

A Contextual Design by architect fábio ferreira neves

In contrast to its more closed-off street-facing side, the south-facing portion Fábio Ferreira Neves’ Casa no Meco gradually opens up to a private garden. Large windows, covered by exterior wooden shutters, allow natural light to flood into the home, connecting the indoor living spaces with the outdoors while maintaining control over sun exposure and privacy. The material choices and construction methods of Casa no Meco respect the local tradition, drawing on familiar Mediterranean architectural imagery. The whitewashed walls and the use of wooden shutters evoke the region’s vernacular, while the pitched roof maintains a simple, recognizable form that complements the surrounding village buildings.

While the design is rooted in tradition, the architect brings a contemporary sensibility to the project. The house adopts a strategy of subtraction to counter undesirable views and focus on optimal solar orientation. By doing so, Casa no Meco harnesses the best aspects of its context, creating a comfortable and protected living space that feels timeless and connected to its environment.
