White Motorcycle Concepts unveils WMC300E+

White Motorcycle Concepts has released its aero-electric motorcycle, the WMC300E+, a trike designed to cut through traffic so paramedics and first responders can quickly reach emergency sites. The vehicle can cruise for up to 100 mph and be charged in under 15 minutes using the battery concept developed by MAHLE Powertrain. Since every second counts, this setup allows for faster emergency responses, especially in critical situations. Recycled carbon fiber makes up parts of the aero-electric motorcycle, and the battery pack reduces the use of rare earth materials (the company, MAHLE Powertrain, has yet to identify these components).

Looking at the vehicle from afar, the front pumps appear to be semi-visible, making the motorcycle seem as if it’s floating. Responders can drive the trike with a standard car license, providing an accessible option for users, including delivery workers. Regarding its design, the WMC300E+ features dedicated strips or parts for custom linings and designs, making it easy to identify whether the vehicle is intended for use as an ambulance, fire responder, police, or for delivery purposes, among others. White Motorcycle Concepts unveiled the WMC300E+ for the first time at Cenex Expo 2024, which runs from September 4th to 5th at UTAC Millbrook in Bedford, UK.

T-shaped battery for equal weight distribution around the trike

The aero-electric motorcycle uses a patented design called the V-Duct, or a venturi duct. It is a tube that narrows in the middle, speeding up the airflow through it to reduce aerodynamic drag and increase speed. The airflow through the duct also helps stabilize the bike, and with less drag, the trike requires less energy to move, extending its range on a single charge. The WMC300E+ also features a T-shaped battery pack designed by engineers from White Motorcycle Concepts and MAHLE Powertrain. This shape allows the battery’s weight to be distributed centrally in the bike, improving handling and stability and complementing the design of the V-duct.

The battery uses advanced Lithium Cobalt Oxide (LCO) chemistry, combined with nickel, manganese, and aluminum (NMA). The chemistry among these elements allows the battery to charge quickly. White Motorcycle Concepts and MAHLE Powertrain state that the battery is resistant to aging and can maintain its performance over time, even with frequent use. There’s a DC-DC converter in the battery pack as well, enabling everything to connect directly to the battery instead of requiring multiple separate connections and components to manage different voltages for the traction motor, the charger, and the aero-electric motorcycle’s 12V system.

White Motorcycle Concepts focuses on the ‘ancillary’ equipment of the WMC300E+, namely the lights, sirens, and radios. Since paramedics and first responders are the primary users envisioned for the design of the aero-electric motorcycle, it’s crucial to ensure these components are powered effectively so they can immediately signal others, be seen by others, and communicate with other emergency personnel. The design team emphasizes that they have ensured the battery system can power all these additional devices, so they don’t fall short in critical moments.

The battery takes up as little space as possible, which is crucial given the limited space on a motorcycle. The design team has made room for other important features, such as large under-seat storage. This compartment is big enough to fit a full-face helmet and doubles as storage for equipment that riders may need, whether it’s a first aid kit or groceries and packages they might need to deliver. Speaking of storage, the battery holds 11.9 kWh, which can power the trike for a long distance or duration without requiring the rider to stop and charge it. So far, White Motorcycle Concepts has yet to announce the availability of their aero-electric motorcycle.
