tentacle media's mini-mutoscope revisits 19th-century motion picture technology

Tentacle Media builds 19th-century inspired mechanical flipbook

James Wilkinson, director at Tentacle Media animation studio, introduces the Mini-Mutoscope, a modern take on 19th-century motion picture technology. This device functions as a mechanical flipbook, featuring 36 still frames that create the illusion of movement. The director emphasizes the analog quality of the Mini-Mutoscope, which contrasts with the digital nature of modern animation. He notes, ‘We love animation, but because the only way to consume it is digital, on a screen, it lacks the tactile quality, the texture, and the presence of print media or physical art.’

Tentacle Media collaborated with Typoretum, known for its antique and vintage printing, to craft a visually appealing body for the device. This collaboration resulted in a plywood-based product with bold colors, crisp lines, and a satisfying tactile feel. Wilkinson highlights the importance of design, stating, ‘We wanted the device itself to look good—something you would want to put on your desk or shelf for a bit of animated inspiration.’

In addition to its design, the Mini-Mutoscope by Tentacle Media also emphasizes sustainability. The UK-based animation studio sourced the mechanical components locally and partnered with the laser engraving and cutting service, The Laser Hut, to create the mechanics from plywood. The device is available as a kit, making it accessible for craft enthusiasts and easy enough for anyone to assemble. The initial release of the Mini-Mutoscope offers a choice of five custom animations featuring vintage movie monsters. There is also an option for a version with blank frames, allowing users to create their own animations. Looking ahead, Wilkinson expresses a desire to collaborate with other animators, saying, ‘We hope to work with other animators who might want to see their work in this unusual format.’
