Casa Deco Blends Historical Preservation with Modern Design

Casa Deco, located in Mérida’s historic center, exemplifies a fusion of heritage preservation and modern functionality. Designed by Taller Mexicano de Arquitectura, the project carefully preserves the building’s original facade and traditional elements while introducing contemporary features.

The residence, which is situated in a historically significant area, has undergone a transformation that respects its architectural heritage. The project aimed to highlight the house’s evolution by integrating modern elements while preserving its historical essence. The design process focused on reinterpreting the traditional ‘central house’ concept, emphasizing the importance of the backyard, balconies, and terraces.

A notable intervention was the addition of an upper-level volume that accommodates essential services, addressing previous deficiencies in the original layout. A new staircase was also introduced to enhance the central space’s character and functionality. These updates were meticulously designed to integrate with the existing structure, preserving the original stone walls and allowing natural light to filter through, thereby showcasing the textures of the materials.

Taller Mexicano de Arquitectura’s material choice for Casa Deco

For the designers at Taller Mexicano de Arquitectura, material choice plays a crucial role in Casa Deco’s design. White concrete was selected as the primary finish to highlight the house’s original features, including its colorful pasta tile floors and antique carpentry. This material choice contrasts with the varied interventions that the house has experienced over time, balancing historical preservation with modern needs. Casa Deco demonstrates how contemporary design can harmoniously blend with historical contexts, ensuring the building’s relevance and functionality for future use while respecting its past.
