a Decade of Connectivity and Light Through Campion’s Lens

Marking its tenth anniversary, Rotterdam Central Station is captured through the lens of Rotterdam-based architectural photographer Andrew Campion, who explores the station‘s dynamic interplay of light from dawn to dusk. Rotterdam Central Station serves as a vital transport hub, connecting cities across the Netherlands and Europe, while also bridging the historic Proveniers district in the north with the modern city center to the south. The station’s design harmonizes with its surroundings, creating a smooth transition between old and new. Campion’s series showcases the transformative quality of light, revealing its architectural nuances throughout the day.

Exploring Rotterdam Central Station’s Architectural details

A vast roof spans the station, filling the space with natural light. Above the northern platforms, passengers arrive under a glass canopy adorned with solar panels. To the north, a modest glass facade opens views to the residential district, while the southern side transforms into a timber-clad hall that leads to a public square. The striking titanium-clad roof, pointing towards the city center, reflects Rotterdam’s contemporary character.

From the moment he stepped onto the sunlit platform, Campion observed the play of shadows stretching across the station floor. His focus shifted to the roof structure, where light filtered through beams, creating a shifting pattern of illumination and shadow. Intrigued by these visual experiences, the photographer dedicated a full day to photographing the station, documenting how light continuously alters the perception of its spaces, surfaces, and forms from sunrise to sunset.
