casa RH14: JVL architects' modern home opens onto the coastal desert of los cabos

contemporary architecture for los cabos, mexico

A recently completed residential project dubbed Casa RH14 has been unveiled by JVL Architects to bring a design-minded retreat to Los Cabos, Mexico. Planned to offer a unique living experience which responds to its natural context — defined by a coastal desert landscape — the architecture takes full advantage of the terrain’s topography,  and blends interior and exterior spaces to create an open connection between the home and its surroundings. A key focus of Casa RH14’s design is the maintenance of visual axes that traverse the spaces, ensuring privacy and unity throughout the house.

casa rh14 is built of stone and reed

The design team at JVL Architects chose primarily natural and regional materials, such as stone and reed, for the construction of Casa RH14. These materials contribute to a warm and inviting atmosphere which reflects the local environment and cultural context. The entrance to the home is marked by a pathway leading to a welcoming garden, bringing a gradual threshold which will soon be covered with plantings. This thoughtful design element sets the tone for the home, which aims to blend nature with architecture right from the entryway.

Inside, Casa RH14 is organized by JVL Architecture along a central axis that connects various spaces. Designed on a plane parallel to the sea, the layout maximizes ocean views and allows natural light to penetrate the interior spaces. Large windows in social areas and bedrooms offer panoramic views of the vast surrounding landscape, creating a continuous flow between indoor and outdoor environments. The orientation of the home ensures that natural light floods all interior spaces, reducing the need for artificial lighting and enhancing the home’s energy efficiency. This strategic design saves energy and curates a bright and welcoming atmosphere throughout the day.
