Thomas Takada unveils nature-inspired lighting collection

Thomas Takada explores the intricate relationship between humans and nature through his Grandpa’s Lamp design. Each lamp in the collection features natural elements that are not only decorative but also structural and essential to its function. The lighting objects come with a rock and a leaf, but the designer encourages owners to go out and find their own too, fostering a deeper connection with the natural world. This process of finding and replacing leaves, which change color with the seasons, offers insights into local climates and geological histories. The minimal design features standardized steel tubes, which house the electrical components. These uncoated steel tubes will rust and develop a patina over time, adding to the lamp’s aesthetic.

Customizable Grandpa’s lamp reflects the passage of time

The user-friendly design by Thomas Takada allows almost any leaf to be clipped in and any stone to be used as a counterweight. Light filters through the leaf, creating a unique illumination that changes with the type of leaf used. The Paris-based architect designed the clip mechanism to be easily removable, making it simple to insert a new leaf when the old one withers. The lamps are equipped with 2W LED lightbulbs, ensuring they produce very little heat and are energy efficient. These objects come in three sizes: the tallest standing at 130cm, the middle size at 75cm, and the smallest at 50cm. The variety in size caters to different spaces and lighting needs while maintaining a consistent design language. As the steel ages and the leaves change, each lamp becomes a living piece of decor that reflects the passage of time.
