a historic istanbul bathhouse reborn

The Zeyrek Çinili Hamam, a centuries-old Turkish bathhouse sited in Istanbul‘s Zeyrek district, has undergone a thirteen-year renovation by KA-BA Architects. This project breathes new life into an important historical landmark — built in the 1530s by architect-in-chief Mimar Sinan — and transforming it into a multifunctional space while preserving its Ottoman architectural heritage. The 30,000 square-foot bathhouse now stands as a peaceful escape from the noise of the surrounding neighborhood.

Turkish baths, or hamams, have played a central role in Ottoman society for centuries. These communal bathing facilities served as spaces for hygiene, social interaction, leisure. They were intricate social hubs, lending a public place for relaxation, conversation, and even matchmaking. The Zeyrek Çinili Hamam, built in the 16th century by the renowned architect Mimar Sinan for the Ottoman admiral Hayreddin Barbarossa, stands as a testament to this rich tradition.

a 13-Year Transformation with Unexpected Discoveries

The extensive renovation project by KA-BA Architects restores the Zeyrek Çinili Hamam’s former glory and adapts it to contemporary uses. During the restoration process, the project ultimately became an archaeological journey. As work progressed, the architects unearthed previously unknown Byzantine cisterns beneath the Hamam, revealing layers of history beneath its foundation. These unexpected discoveries added a new dimension to the project, calling for careful integration of the unearthed structures into the renovated Hamam.

KA-BA Architects both preserves the historic architecture and introduces new programming. The team carefully and respectfully restored the building’s Ottoman features, including its intricate tilework, domes, and bathing areas, ensuring the Hamam’s architectural heritage is safeguarded for future generations. What’s more, a museum space was introduces within the Hamam, allowing visitors to learn about its history, the traditions of Ottoman bathing rituals, and the unepected archaeological finds. The new complex further includes an event space, making it a versatile venue for cultural gatherings and exhibitions.

With its restoration of historic features, discovery of hidden histories, and introduction of contemporary programming, the Zeyrek Çinili Hamam’s renovation by KA-BA Architects is as a successful example of historical preservation and adaptive reuse.
