concrete crown transforms 1978 grain silo in austria into storing center for wood pellets

completed by obermoser + partner architekten & Hanno Schlög

obermoser + partner architekten, in collaboration with architect Hanno Schlögl, has transformed a 1978 grain silo in Austria into a modern hub for storing and trading wood pellets. The Gutmann Pellets Silo balances the preservation of the site’s industrial heritage with the introduction of new functional elements, blending old and new into a cohesive architectural monolith.

At the core of the redesign is a ‘crown’ — a glass box encased in precast concrete elements — resting atop the original structure. This extension maintains the site’s architectural identity while creating a new silhouette. Additionally, minimal external interventions ensure the building retains its authenticity.

Gutmann Pellets Silo enjoys an art lounge extension

Internally, obermoser + partner architekten and Hanno Schlögl strategically placed a staircase and elevator to preserve the Gutmann Pellets Silo’s original, archaic atmosphere. The Austrian studio also introduced a new art lounge, placed at the top of the structure. From here, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and or engage in business events and cultural gatherings. Completed within a year, the renovation has turned a once-neglected industrial complex into a new landmark, which now serves as an emblem for the client’s company.
