cherry blossom pavilion unfolds like a flower in taiwan

A lightweight structure of intricately undulating organic forms, MARC FORNES / THE VERYMANY’s Cherry Blossom Pavilion invites rest and play in Taichung City, Taiwan. Planted in an industrial park often frequented by tourists and locals alike, its thin-shell aluminum construction devised by advanced computation nods to its context while injecting an artful sense of dynamism to the site.

Its monumental volume rises and contorts, unfolding like the petals of a flower and creating within it various pockets and openings to frame views of the garden’s cherry blossom trees and the blue sky above. At the intersection between sculptural art installation and architectural shelter, the pavilion poses a moment of respite from Taiwan’s heat, fostering exploration and social interaction.

MARC FORNES / THEVERYMANY bridges art and architecture

Marc Fornes, lead architect of New York-based studio THEVERYMANY, has long been utilizing advanced technologies and innovating a non-linear typology for vast public art installations and micro architectures. The Cherry Blossom Pavilion’s complex curvilinear surfaces are developed through parametric and computational processes, from design to fabrication, resulting in a vast, continuous, ultra-thin system where envelop and support become one.

As visitors explore the pavilion, encircling it or passing through, they encounter new spatial experiences, new interactions with the structure’s skin, and a range of glimpses of the encompassing environment. Creating various points of entry and a sequence of archways and canopies the studio creates a winding playground where visitors can enjoy the shelter and each other’s company.
