timber screens adorn the facade of bombaLa house

Designed by Sealand Architects, the Bombala residence nestles on the scenic Sunshine Coast of Queensland, Australia. The house fosters a connection between its occupants and the surrounding environment through large sliding glass doors and windows that open to the outdoors. Bespoke window hoods and timber screens adorn the ribbed facade of the residence, offering protection from the subtropical sun and rain. The material palette enhances the sense of space and provides a calm atmosphere. Embracing the site’s irregularity, the residence includes shaded outdoor areas on both sides and a central courtyard garden, providing shelter or sun depending on the time of day and season.

sealand architects makes australian living accessible

Bombala opens onto a central courtyard garden with a pool and outdoor shower, creating a private space for relaxation and entertainment. The design by Sealand Architects prioritizes accessibility and adaptability, with the ground level being wheelchair accessible. The garage, living areas, and a second main bedroom are all on this level without steps. This thoughtful layout ensures that the clients can comfortably age in place. The upper-level bedroom suite provides flexibility for accommodating a relative or carer in the future if needed.

The interior design addresses creating a double-height living space with good acoustics. The designers introduce a timber batten ceiling with acoustic panels to ensure the space is quiet, with no echo. This results in a visually appealing and acoustically pleasing open living area. The clients appreciate their home, which allows them to enjoy long lunches with friends and family, watch boats on the water, or have drinks by the pool.
