K-Thengono’s House on V-Shaped Stilts hovers above waterfront

K-Thengono Design Studio has crafted the House on V-Shaped Stilts, revitalizing an elevated residence in north Jakarta to address land subsidence and enhance its waterfront connection. Situated 0.7 meters below sea level with further subsidence projected, the design required strategic planning to ensure longevity and stability.

A pile-slab foundation secures the structure, with plumbing and electrical systems attached to minimize potential damage. A 4.5-meter-high dike shields the property from coastal flooding. The living areas are elevated on V-shaped stilts, reducing columns and creating a flood-proof space with panoramic ocean views. This design separates parking and service areas on the raised ground floor from the upper levels housing private amenities.

design attends to coastal resilience and sustainable living

The upper floors feature a communal area with a pool, private sea-view bedrooms, and a multipurpose space with a canal-view balcony. Each floor is designed to provide shade, reducing cooling needs, with durable and low-maintenance materials. The exterior integrates indoor and outdoor living, with coastal-adaptive and edible plants acting as windbreaks. A rainwater harvesting system supports eco-friendly landscaping.

The exterior includes a pet-friendly section and a terrace for yoga or barbecues, leading to a private pier. This environmentally conscious and resilient design by K-Thengono offers luxury, privacy, and peace of mind in the face of a sinking coastline.
