the deadline for submissions is JUNE 28

Organized by the Seoul Design Foundation, the Seoul Design Award 2024 welcomes participants who are committed to shaping a brighter, more sustainable future. Building on the theme of ‘designs for sustainable daily life,’ the Award seeks to highlight projects that promote harmony between people, society, and the environment, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Designers from around the world are invited to submit their entries by June 28, with focus on two different areas: projects realized within the past five years, or research on project realization, such as mockups and prototypes.

The 2024 edition of the Award continues to celebrate outstanding design solutions that tackle contemporary challenges. Among the winners of the previous year were projects like the Classroom Makeover for The Blind from Thailand, where a school’s old library was remodeled into a multi-sensory experiential classroom to aid in special early education of children with visual impairment. Another notable mention was the Angsila Oyster Scaffolding Pavilion from Thailand – a concept that created a new economic structure called eco-tourism by redesigning the oyster farm structure, and essentially inducing active cooperation from local fishermen. Another winner was the Jerrycan Bag from Korea, a bag that helps African children safely transport jerry cans (water containers), produced by Uganda women. Each of these won the second prize for the Best of Best award, showcasing exemplary creativity, participation, and impact.

An esteemed international panel of experts is evaluating the registered projects, with winners announced during the awards ceremony in October, 2024. All kinds of designs are welcomed, ranging from product to visual and digital/multimedia, to spatial/system and service/experiential/social. In its previous edition in 2023, the Seoul Design Award saw significant global engagement, with 2,384 individuals from 60 nations participating in the voting process for the Citizens’ Award. This emblematic participation underscores the Award’s commitment to fostering communication, peoples’ involvement, and the sharing of diverse design concepts with the public. Among the notable winners was the Kumulus Amphora by Air Design Studio from Tunisia, which was recognized for its innovative approach to providing safe drinking water using humidity and solar heat, earning the prestigious Grand Prize.
