redesigning the indian railway toilet by sougat hota from india
designer's own words:
I was inspired to take the Indian railway toilet as my target area because of personal experiences as well as the recent Media attention to Jairam Ramesh’s comments regarding the state of public sanitation system.
The problems with the current system were mainly lying under two wide areas i.e., Ergonomics and Hygiene. So i have tried to employ my design thinking to arrive at a better solution. Studying statistics i found that Major use of toilets on long distance trains was for urinating. This activity can be accomplished by a normal wall
urinal which is easier to clean and use as well. So my design can shift between a normal urinal and a full fledged toilet on demand.
This makes the space less daunting with no visible holes and features which are hidden away in hygienic self cleaning compartments.
The metal supports on either side of the toilet provide support as well as possessing flush and faucet triggers to leave an arm free for other duties. The faucet is also height adjustable.
The provision of a closed storage cabinet takes care of your belongings when you are using the toilet.
The seating system which is also stowed away in the wall inside a self cleaning recess can be triggered by pulling a lever and offers seating support for the user offering
better hygiene than a conventional western toilet
