Echo crafts the Sanna Hut in response to its challenging context

Echo, led by Sam Booth, designs the Sanna Hut responding to the challenging context of its remote location at the farthest point of the UK mainland. Situated in Sanna Bay, known for its windswept conditions and pristine sandy beaches, the design draws from the rugged coastal surroundings. The three distinct forms of the cabin, particularly the largest, evoke the appearance of a vessel perched on a stony outcrop, reminiscent of flotsam on rocks. Positioned just 200 meters from the beach, it seamlessly integrates with the nearby township, resembling a boat washed ashore.

The construction, marked by its minimal impact on the site, requires no traditional foundations. Instead, it rests on a galvanized steel substructure anchored to a stone mound on the croft. Accessible via a narrow timber and steel gangway leading to a small deck, the Hut’s unassuming exterior contrasts with its well-thought-out contemporary interior. Despite its modest size, the 29 sqm open-plan space is designed for comfort and luxury, catering to well-traveled visitors.

breathable materials ensure a comfortable indoor environment

The L-shaped plan divides the interior into two distinct yet functional spaces, centered around a flickering stove. Floor-to-ceiling windows on nearly every side offer expansive views, while shutters and doors provide natural ventilation. Echo‘s breathable sheathing materials selection, sheep wool insulation, and untreated renewable spruce paneling contribute to a comfortable indoor environment, regulating humidity. Integral blinds on all windows and doors manage solar gain, ensuring a well-lit interior during the long days and short summer nights of the remote outpost.
