Jô Vasconcellos reconfigures an apartment in Edifício Pilar

Situated in downtown Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, a 100 sqm apartment within the iconic Edifício Pilar undergoes a transformative intervention and renovation, blending modern sophistication with urban functionality. Built in 1961, the residential complex boasts diverse floorplans and a ground-level commercial area, setting the stage for a contemporary reinterpretation. Designer Jô Vasconcellos’ vision for this project revolves around three key principles — the seamless integration of spaces, the commitment to the authentic character of materials, especially the robust concrete structures, and the pursuit of fluidity in design. The apartment, previously compartmentalized into smaller rooms, is strategically reconfigured to align with the owner’s programmatic needs.

concrete interiors act as a backdrop for one-of-a-kind furniture

Unveiling the concealed beauty of the concrete structures, which were artfully camouflaged behind an array of materials, Vasconcellos‘ intervention simplifies the interior aesthetic by introducing a uniform flooring solution. The design narrative leans on unconventional materials and forms, injecting a sense of originality into the space while enhancing its fluidity. Emphasizing the significance of natural light and capturing views of the adjacent Municipal Park, the intervention optimizes the visual connectivity with the urban surroundings. The design aligns seamlessly with contemporary lifestyles marrying the old structure with a reimagined living space.
