yangnar studio draws on northern thai vernacular

Surrounded by lush paddy fields and the mountain peaks of Mae Rim, Chiang Mai, Thingamajiggy by Yangnar Studio is a coffee shop that appears to emulate a rice barn. Its form draws on the circular elements of northern Thai vernacular architecture, employing sustainable practices to integrate the structure into its rural environment — letting nature play a prominent role in the architectural canvas. Notably, the coffee shop is an incomplete endeavour, thriving on the ever-changing seasons and climate which shape its identity, inviting visitors to dine in an open-air in the space tucked between its two wooden and bamboo structures. The space itself remains flexible, anticipating the maturation of young trees planted with the original intent of the owner, and adapting to the changing seasons.

the architecture melds into its natural landscape

Yangnar Studio adopted a technique to extract and repurpose wooden structures, contributing to the walls of the building and creating a connection with the rice’s pressure from the inside. Additionally, the architects experimented with extending the wooden beam structures and a prefabricated wooden system assembled on-site with concrete. The site’s expansive greenery hosts a grassy lawn and a temporary bamboo pavilion at the center, crafted with local knowledge. Contrary to mainstream bamboo construction, it embraces simplicity and the inherent characteristics of the material, with a framework tightly lashed together using fishing net rope. Filtering light temporarily, this roofing creates an ever-changing outdoor experience, allowing visitors to connect with nature.
