ANIMALIA PARK Bridges Nature and Architecture

Animalia Park by AM2 Arquitetura’s designer Alessandro Malara Manso is an expansive biopark situated in Cotia, on the outskirts of São Paulo. This vibrant ecosystem welcomes visitors to an immersive encounter with nature. The open-air park covers a 10.000 sqm plot and unfolds across 35 acres of carefully preserved topography, respecting the original landscape.

The project follows the concept of the ‘Immersion Enclosure’ integrating visitors into an environment where greenery invades the built space and animals roam freely into a meticulously crafted habitat closely resembling their natural surroundings. Discreet barriers guide human traffic while ensuring the well-being and comfort of the animals.

The design exudes a commitment to environmental enrichment, from the choice of natural substrates to native vegetation. Serene water ponds and scenic waterfalls mimic an entire ecosystem. The pathway entwined with resting points induces the visitors to a sensory experience.

Suspended walkways compose the Park’s Sensory Pathway

Suspended walkways, with protective guards, offer several views of the green sanctuary below. The metallic framework supporting the enclosure’s roofing boasts strategically positioned openings, infusing the space with natural light and facilitating permanent ventilation. This design enhances the quality of life for the animal inhabitants and also encourages their unobtrusive observation. Beyond introducing fauna to the community, the core of a biopark like this is forging a profound connection between humans and animals, nurturing mutual respect.

‘A rich amount of details presented during the project allowed for the exchange of experiences and knowledge between professionals and technicians involved’, shares AM2 Arquitetura‘s architect Alessandro Malara.
