‘house in an arch’

UK firm piercy conner architects & designers‘ latest proposal which features a house in a brick arch seeks to create a ‘new london vernacular’.

‘to create a new london vernacular is a crazy idea, hugely ambitious but it could just work? why do people love the georgian town house so much? they are adaptable, solid, beautifully proportioned, decorated giving a feeling of importance or civic pride, light filled and above all they are loved by everybody – even modernists. I believe it is a time for ambition, innovation and progress – london has built a lot of mediocre stuff and now we must move on to address a whole new set of conditions. we are searching for a strong identity that is neither modern, classical or fashionable but appropriate and sympathetic in form and materials.‘ – PCA

based on the proportions of a georgian terrace, this four storey structure can be sub-divided in a multitude of ways to provide anything from a 6 bed house to 4 single bed apartments. the structure is open with no internal walls required for support.

‘we are looking to use materials that people can relate to, that have a relationship with the nature of victorian london that we love so much, while using them in ways that create delight and inspirational forms and spaces. we have based our vision on the beauty of the arch a structure that quietly carves its way through london carrying thousands of commuters and providing the single most diverse building type – the railway arch.‘ – PCA
