NOMO STUDIO’s Shift House alternates between solid and glass

NOMO STUDIO composes a vacation home in Spain out of simple rectangle volumes shifted in plan to create a dynamic form despite the limited space of the plot. Fluted concrete walls sliced by continuous window openings define the design of Shift House as a combination of horizontal stripes alternating solid and glass.

The heaviness of the grooved concrete block used in the facade generates a gravity tension with the 360º surrounding glazed bands. The common area opens up to an elevated terrace that extends into a spill-over pool, all located on the top floor to ensure sea views. Continuous windows offer views in all directions as well as plenty of natural light. A sunken patio is introduced in the basement to bring abundant light and ventilation to all three stories. Finally, an outer stair leads to a rooftop solarium that unveils panoramic views of the Mediterranean.

light pine wood and polished white concrete adorn the interior

Roughly-polished white concrete flooring and travertine steps combine with simple white walls and khaki-beige micro-cement in bathrooms and kitchen. Built-in storage such as wardrobes and bathroom furniture designed by the design team at NOMO STUDIO feature artisanal ratan and light pine wood carpentry. Bright wooden details such as massive handrails and deeply integrated doorsteps bring warmth to the beach-like airy interiors. In contrast, the exteriors feature darker wattle ceilings and teak carpentry providing the villa with a sense of sober elegance and quality in its materials.
