THREE PIECES/ TRES PIEZAS is a dynamic and adaptable home designed by Estudio Gonzalo del Val + Toni Gelabert. This project responds to the changing urban landscape of Madrid post-pandemic, where vacant tourist apartments are being repurposed, and remote work is on the rise. Formerly two separate tourist apartments are unified into a functional and enjoyable home after the owner’s return to Madrid following work abroad. The plan attends to the new owner’s needs for a versatile living space for both personal use and hosting international guests, as well as a workspace for remote work. The design centers around three distinct elements that redefine the apartment’s layout within its compact 70 sqm footprint. The renovated apartment is photographed by José Hevia.

three tiled blocks organize the domestic environment

A birch wood box houses the kitchen and bookcase, while a salmon-tiled structure contains the dining area and entrance. A ‘technified’ totem with yellow tiles organizes the main room, dividing it into four functional areas; bedroom, dressing room, sink, and shower.

Located in Madrid’s neighborhood of Lavapiés, the house transforms into an enjoyable and comfortable space for a single person adjusting dynamic volumes into the layout. The design team enhances the apartment’s flexibility by sliding doors that can be strategically opened or closed to optimize space utilization. For instance, when all doors are open, the room becomes a suite with an adjoining bathroom. Closing specific doors creates separate bathroom and toilet areas, allowing easy access to the main room.
