In Tulum, Mexico, TULIX by Coyote Arquitectura is a home that seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor spaces to redefine the concept of urban living. The space is marked by the architects’ playful configuration of red volumes which project an interplay of shadows into interior spaces and onto neighboring structures. To maintain its unique identity, the complex features an exterior finish in a distinctive reddish paste. This further eliminates the need for frequent maintenance and modifications that might alter the visual appeal of the project, reducing long-term costs and ensuring the project’s integrity over time. Meanwhile within,  various external and internal microclimates with lush islands of vegetation blur the boundaries between architecture and nature and reinforce an eco-conscious approach.

Beyond its functional purpose, the succession of volumes also contributes to the creation of an urban sculpture characterized by a rhythmic interplay of different blind planes. These changing planes frame captivating views of the surroundings, enhanced by the presence of indigenous vegetation. Notably, Coyote Arquitectura places an emphasis on sustainability and environmental consciousness. Covering 55.70% of the property with permeable soil and greenery, TULIX’s design fosters a harmonious dialogue between nature and built structures. Each volume comprises numerous solids that reduce the absorption of calorific energy within the houses while ensuring efficient cross ventilation throughout the spaces. This approach is further supported by the integration of internal windows, domes, and solariums.

Encouraging residents to nurture plant species and even grow their own food, every housing module boasts a small garden — either external or internal. Additionally, the architects employ permeable and vegetal soil throughout the complex, including common areas and parking lots, promoting sustainable water management and environmental balance.
