studio Ardete’s Sculptural Concrete Facade for the Ribbon House

In a tranquil neighborhood of Punjab, India, Studio Ardete has completed a residential project with a dynamic sculptural facade. Dubbed the Ribbon House, the structure redefines the architectural language of the region, establishing its own distinctive character. Spanning a plot area of 3,712 square feet, the dwelling not only carves out a unique identity for itself but also reflects the aspirations of its inhabitants. According to the architects, the project serves as a tribute to the client’s profession in the construction industry, which has encompassed diverse projects of varying scales and proportions and stands as a tangible reminder of his career.

Inspired by the organic contours found in nature, the design of the Ribbon House harmoniously integrates fluid lines that resemble a gently unfurling ribbon, elegantly embracing the entire structure. Its exterior, crafted mainly from concrete, introduces a dynamic element that adds a sense of movement and vitality to the building’s appearance. This creates a sense of boundless exploration, forging a feeling of enduring continuity.

the ribbon house plays with geometry and light

The interplay between the concrete and the structural elements resembles the relationship between fluid and solid, yielding a living organism. By breaking down the overall volume of the structure into slender curves, ample natural light permeates the interior, fostering a sense of openness. Additionally, this design choice promotes sufficient air circulation and ventilation. Furthermore, the protruding concrete volumes offer shade for the openings while adding a distinct shape and style to the facade.

Upon entering the house, residents or visitors are greeted by a spiral staircase, appearing as if it is floating within the structure. This staircase serves as a connecting element between the different floors of the house, gradually unfolding itself as one climbs higher. Users are invited to discover additional areas and unexpected corners within the space. On the other hand, the architects at Studio Ardete strategically opted for a minimal interior to emphasize the unique elements that distinguish each room. The structural system of the staircase encourages one to investigate the house and engage in a puzzle-solving experience.
