design moment – design on the make – is a commitment from the TDIC to put the middle east on the design map. the initiative investigates the current creative potential of design in the middle east and promotes the design process as a tool for cultural understanding and creativity. design moment includes huda baroudi and maria hibri of bokja design (lebanon), reem al ghaith (uae), ahmed angawi (saudi arabia), nedda el asmar (palestine), and younes duret (morocco).

bokja design is owned by huda baroudi, who studied at the american university of beirut, and maria hibri who studied at the american university of beirut and the lebanese american university. huda and maria are creating 12 versions of their signature couture chair, with a patchwork of recycled textiles from all over the world.
‘what’s left of my land’ by reem al ghaith
reem al ghaith is from dubai and studied visual communication at the american university of sharjah and was the youngest artist to show at the 2009 sharjah biennial. al ghaith works in a variety of media including photography, drawing, graphic design and print. for abu dhabi art 09, she is designing objects which utilize motifs found on the doors of buildings in old dubai.
‘prayer rug’ by ahmed angawi
ahmed angawi is from saudi arabia and studied industrial design at the pratt institute in brooklyn. creating objects which have strong cultural themes, his work is comprised of products ranging from furniture to the prayer rug.

nedda el asmar of palestinian origin, is a designer based in belgium. el asmar studied jewelry design and silver smithing at the royal academy for fine arts in antwerp. she works for renowned names as hermes and villeroy & boch.

younes duret is a moroccan who studied at the ecole nationale superieure de creation industrielle, paris. for the exhibition duret will design a modernist version of the humble traditional moroccan pouffe(a type of thick cushion used as seating. duret created younes duret design agency.
